Creating for Cinema

Following their collaboration on THE IDES OF MARCH, ALEXANDRE DESPLAT continues his working relationship with George Clooney on his latest directorial effort THE MONUMENTS MEN. The adventure thriller starring Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin and John Goodman, has a guest appearance by Desplat himself. (Columbia/Dec. 18) DESPLAT also scored Stephen Frears' PHILOMENA which had it's premiere at the Toronto and Venice Film Festivals, and also scored Roman Polanki's drama VENUS IN FUR as well as Jerome Salle's ZULU starring Orlando Bloom and Forest Whitaker. (Sundance Selects/Dec. 18)

Following his acclaimed work on the Oscar-winning short PAPERMAN, CHRISTOPHE BECK tackles his first animated feature film, FROZEN. The Disney production is based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale THE SNOW QUEEN and features a voice cast that includes Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel. (Disney/Nov. 27)

MARY POPPINS songwriter RICHARD M. SHERMAN has been brought on board as Music Consultant to the highly anticipated drama, SAVING MR. BANKS starring Emma Thompson as author P.L. Travers and Tom Hanks as Walt Disney. The movie, which tells the untold story of how a Disney classic made it to the screen, features a young Richard Sherman portrayed by Jason Schwartzman as well as Paul Giamatti and Colin Farrell. The Walt Disney film helmed by THE BLIND SIDE director John Lee Hancock was music supervised by MATT SULLIVAN. (Disney/Dec. 20)

GRAEME REVELL concludes his first film trilogy with the #1 film in America, David Twohy's RIDDICK starring Vin Diesel as antihero Riddick, the dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy. The third part in the series follows the hit sci-fi film PITCH BLACK and THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK.

STEVE BARTEK arranged, orchestrated and co-produced Rodrigo Leao's score for the hit drama LEE DANIELS' THE BUTLER. The smash film stars Forest Whitaker as a White House butler who served eight American presidents over three decades. The cast also includes Oprah Winfrey, Jane Fonda, John Cusack, Lenny Kravitz, Robin Williams, James Marsden, Alan Rickman, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrrence Howard.

MARK ISHAM composed the "family theme" for this year's hit supernatural horror thriller THE CONJURING. The movie directed by James Wan and starring Lily Taylor, Patrick Wilson and Ron Livingston is this year's highest grossing horror film. ISHAM also reteams with director Gary Fleder (DON'T SAY A WORD, KISS THE GIRLS) on the thriller HOMEFRONT starring Jason Statham, James Franco, Winona Ryder and Kate Bosworth. (Open Road Films/Nov. 22) Finally, the composer also co-scored the drama THE INEVITABLE DEFEAT OF MISTER AND PETE which premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival. (Lionsgate/Oct. 11)

MARCELO ZARVOS reteams with director Nicole Holofcener (PLEASE GIVE) on Fox Searchlight's romance ENOUGH SAID. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, James Gandolfini, Caherine Keener, Toni Collette and Ben Falcone star. The romantic comedy premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. (Fox Searchlight/Sept. 20) The composer also scored the drama THE FACE OF LOVE directed by Arie Prosin and starring Annette Bening, Ed Harris and Robin Williams.

Following this year's top-grossing movie IRON MAN 3 and previous hit films such as THE AVENGERS, THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, DAVE JORDAN continues his relationship with Marvel Studios, as music supervisor, on the superhero movie THOR: THE DARK WORLD. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba and Anthony Hopkins. (Marvel/Nov. 8)

MARCO BELTRAMI has teamed up for the first time with Korean cult director Bong Joon-ho to score the thriller SNOWPIERCER starring Ed Harris, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell and Octavia Spencer. The composer's "excitingly big, brassy original score" was singled out by Variety. The movie will be released in the US by the Weinstein Company. BELTRAMI also scored CARRIE, the reimagining of the classic horror tale based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King, directed by Kimberly Pierce and stars Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore. (MGM/Oct. 14)

JON BRION composed the score for Dreamworks Pictures' comedy DELIVERY MAN. The remake of the French-Canadian hit film STARBUCK stars Vince Vaughn as an underachiever who finds out he's fathered 533 children through donations to a fertility clinic 20 years ago. JONATHAN KARP serves as the movie's music supervisor. (Dreamworks/Nov. 22)

TREVOR RABIN is teaming up again with GET SMART director Peter Segal to provide the music for the sports comedy GRUDGE MATCH. The movie stars film legends Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone as old boxing rivals who come out of retirement for one final match. Kevin Hart and Alan Arkin are also starring. (Warner Bros/Dec. 25)

CHRISTOPHER LENNERTZ has composed the score for the Screen Gems break-dance drama BATTLE OF THE YEAR starring Josh Holloway, Laz Alonso, Josh Peck and Chris Brown. LENNERTZ  also wrote the music for the comedy drama THANKS FOR SHARING directed by Stuart Blumberg, the Academy Award-nominated co-writer of THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT and starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Ruffalo, Tim Robbins and Josh Gad. Academy Award-winning composer GABRIEL YARED scored the French hit comedy HAUTE CUISINE. The movie directed by Christian Vincent follows a renowned chef who is appointed by President François Mitterrand as his personal cook. (Weinstein Co/Sept. 20)

Academy Award-nominated composer JOHN DEBNEY has written the score for the biographical drama JOBS starring Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs, the original innovator and ground-breaking entrepreneur of Apple. Reuniting again after the searing documentary STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE, DANNY ELFMAN scored Oscar-winning filmmaker Errol Morris’ new contribution to cinéma vérité: THE UNKNOWN KNOWN. The film explores the controversial career and wartime decisions of Donald Rumsfeld...through the words and account of the man himself.

JULIA MICHELS serves as the music supervisor on Fox Searchlight's romantic comedy BAGGAGE CLAIM. The movie stars Paula Patton as a flight attended who is determined to get engaged before her youngest sister's wedding and finds herself with only 30 days to find Mr. Right. The film features a duet with Marsha Ambrosius and Anthony Hamilton. (Fox Searchlight/Sept. 25)

NICK URATA lead singer of the band Devotchka, has composed the score for the comedy A.C.O.D. starring Adam Scott, Amy Poehler, Richard Jenkins, Catherine O'Hara, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jane Lynch, Ken Howard and Clark Duke. The comedy premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival. (Film Arcade/Oct. 4)

Music Supervisor MIKE HIGHAM reunites with Academy Award-nominated director Paul Greengrass on his latest feature CAPTAIN PHILLIPS. The Sony Pictures production stars Tom Hanks. The music supervisor and supervising music editor has previously worked with Greengrass on the critically acclaimed UNITED 93. (Columbia/Oct. 11)

CHRISTOPHE BECK scored the 20th Century Fox thriller RUNNER, RUNNER helmed by THE LINCOLN LAWYER director Brad Furman and starring Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck. DAVE JORDAN served as the movie's music consultant. The film features songs by deadmau5. (Fox/Sept. 27)

Golden Globe winner ANGELO BADALAMENTI went to battle with his score for the upcoming Russian film STALINGRAD, a stylized 3D spectacle about the epic confrontation between the Germans and Russians during World War II. Directed by Russian actor/director Fedor Bondarchuk, the film stars Thomas Kretschmann, Yanina Studilina, and Philippe Reinhardt. (Disney/Oct. 10)

Composer/guitarist extraordinaire MICHAEL EINZIGER (Incubus) scored the violent character drama SCENIC ROUTE, the debut feature of brothers Kevin and Michael Goetz. The film stars Josh Duhamel and Dan Fogler as two longtime friends whose true natures are brutally exposed by the desert sun. (Vertical Entertainment/Aug. 23)

ALAN MENKEN’s Oscar-winning music for Disney’s classic THE LITTLE MERMAID will accompany the big screen again for a special 3D engagement exclusively at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. Disney has also created a special iPad app for audiences to interact with the film. (Disney/Sept. 13 – Oct. 13)

Master horror composer JOSEPH LoDUCA scored the return of the genre’s most infamous doll in CURSE OF CHUCKY. Featuring Chucky’s original voice, Brad Dourif, the Universal film was directed by series veteran Don Mancini and stars Danielle Bisutti and Alex Vincent. (Universal/Oct. 8)
Creating for Stage

Broadway-bound stage adaptation of ALAN MENKEN's animated classic ALADDIN will premiere at Toronto's Ed Mirvish Theatre on November 13. The stage production features music by ALAN MENKEN and lyrics by the late Howard Ashman, Tim Rice and Chad Begueli and is directed by BOOK OF MORMON's Casey Nicholaw. Menken won two Academy Awards and two Golden Globes for the ALADDIN score and the original song A WHOLE NEW WORLD. The musical will move to Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre in 2014.

Sam Mendes' theatrical stage musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's beloved classic, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, with music by MARC SHAIMAN and lyrics by MARC SHAIMAN and SCOTT WITTMAN, premiered at London's Drury Theatre to rave reviews. Broadway World says, "From the gentle opening number through the frantic pastiches introducing each child, to Wonka's own songs ('Simply Second Nature' is an understated highlight of the evening) and the Oompa Loompa tunes, the music changes flavours like one of Wonka's three-course bubble gums." Click here for an interview with the composers and visit Playbill for numerous videos highlighting musical moments from the lavish production.
Creating for Broadcast

Emmy Award-winning composer GEOFF ZANELLI is composing the score for the National Geographic Channel television event KILLING KENNEDY. The movie starring Rob Lowe, Will Rothhaar and Ginnifer Goodwin chronicles the buildup to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy by Lee Harvey Oswald. Ridley Scott is executive producing the drama. (NatGeo/Nov. 10)

Following his Emmy-nominated score for the record-breaking miniseries HATFIELDS & McCOYS, JOHN DEBNEY returns for another TV event with History's BONNIE & CLYDE. The four-hour series starring Holly Hunter and William Hurt premieres this fall for the first time ever on three networks: A&E, History and Lifetime.

Showtime’s hit series, RAY DONOVAN, has been renewed for a second season, and will continue to feature the music of MARCELO ZARVOS. The show, starring Liev Schreiber as a “fixer” for LA celebrities in legal trouble, received the cable network’s highest-rated series debut ever, and has steadily grown in viewers and accolades. Earlier this year Zarvos also scored the HBO original movie PHIL SPECTOR, directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker David Mamet and starring Al Pacino and Helen Mirren as the controversial figures at the center of the real-life murder trial. The TV movie was nominated for 11 Emmys.

CHRIS BACON returns to score the A&E original series BATES MOTEL created by LOST writer Carlton Cuse inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO surrounding the life of Norman and Norma Bates. The show starring Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga who was nominated for an Emmy Award for her lead performance will return for its second season in early 2014.

Following his work on HBO's critically acclaimed comedy series GIRLS, MICHAEL PENN is writing the music for the Showtime original series MASTERS OF SEX. The drama stars Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan, who portrays the real-life pioneers of the science of human sexuality, William Masters and Virginia Johnson. Academy Award-winning director John Madden has directed the pilot episode. (Showtime/Sept. 29)

Emmy-nominated composer CHRISTOPHER LENNERTZ continues to score NBC's hit drama REVOLUTION produced by J.J. Abrams and created by Erik Kripke. The composer's music from the first season has recently been released by WaterTower Music is now available to download on iTunes. (NBC/Sept. 25) LENNERTZ also returns to score the long-running CW hit show SUPERNATURAL. (CW/Oct. 8)

DAVID BUCKLEY continues to score the critically acclaimed CBS drama THE GOOD WIFE starring Julianne Margulies, Josh Charles, Christine Baranski and Alan Cumming. The show has recently been nominated for five more Emmy Awards. (CBS/Sept. 29)

BT makes his network TV show scoring debut with the ABC drama BETRAYAL starring Hannah Ware, Stuart Townsend and James Cromwell. Patty Jenkins, who collaborated with the composer on the critically acclaimed feature drama MONSTER, for which Charlize Theron won an Oscar, directed the pilot episode. (ABC/Sept. 29)

MARK ISHAM returns to score ABC's hit fantasy drama ONCE UPON A TIME. (ABC/Sept. 29). ISHAM is also scoring the spin-off ONCE UPON A TIME IN WONDERLAND, which is set in the world of Lewis Carroll's ALICE IN WONDERLAND in modern times. (ABC/Oct. 10) The composer also reunites with director Frank Darabont on TNT's new drama MOB CITY. The series follows the battle between a determined police chief and a dangerous mobster in 1940s Los Angeles. (TNT/Dec. 4)

EDWARD SHEARMUR is on board for another round of DEVIOUS MAIDS, which was recently renewed for a second season. The Lifetime series, created by Marc Cherry (DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES), stars Dania Ramirez, Judy Reyes, and Brianna Brown as Latina maids in Beverly Hills with larger ambitions. In its first season it was the fastest-growing drama in Lifetime’s history.

Emmy winner GEOFF ZANELLI is scoring the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie CHRISTMAS AT CONWAY. The holiday-themed drama, about a man who sets up a ferris wheel in his backyard for his ailing wife, stars Oscar-nominated Andy Garcia, Mary Louise-Parker, and Mandy Moore. (Hallmark/December)
Creating for Gaming

Composer CHRISTOPHER LENNERTZ has scored Electronic Arts latest installment in the NFL franchise, MADDEN 25. For the 25th anniversary release, EA enlisted the MASS EFFECT 3 and STARHAWK composer to provide an orchestral-rock hybrid sound for the iconic series.

Grammy Award nominee AUSTIN WINTORY recently recorded his score to the upcoming Stoic Studio game THE BANNER SAGA, performed by the Dallas Winds. Among Wintory's other game projects is The Independent Game Festival Seumus McNally Grand Prize winner MONACO which was recently released to immense commercial success.  The composer also contributed music to the award-winning action adventure game BEATBUDDY: TALE OF THE GUARDIANS from Threaks available now on Steam. As a follow up to last year's collaboration on KINECT PARTY, Austin has also reunited with acclaimed developer Double Fine on their recent psychedelic music puzzle game DROPCHORD. Lastly, Austin has composed the music for PORTAL creator Kim Swift's SOUL FJORD, a rhythm-based dungeon crawler set in a fantasy universe where the genre of 70's Funk has melded with Norse mythology.
Creating for the Humanities

Hot off the success of the DESPICABLE ME series, KEM is thrilled to welcome Brazilian composer HEITOR PEREIRA on board. The multitalented composer, songwriter, and guitarist leapt from a popular performing career in his home country to the world of cinema when he was commissioned to write a song for James Brooks' Oscar-nominated comedy, AS GOOD AS IT GETS, and he has never looked back. First contributing additional music to a stream of popular films—including BLACK HAWK DOWN, SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2, SHREK 2, MADAGASCAR, and SPANGLISH—he has since composed original scores for a broad spectrum of films, from the Latin grooves of DIRTY DANCING: HAVANA NIGHTS, to the animated pluck of CURIOUS GEORGE and BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA, to the amorous fantasy A LITTLE BIT OF HEAVEN, to the romantic comedies IT'S COMPLICATED (co-scored with Hans Zimmer) and FROM PRADA TO NADA. Pereira most recently scored the blockbuster family films THE SMURFS 2 and DESPICABLE ME 2. In addition to James Brooks he has collaborated with Penny Marshall, Nancy Meyers, and Robert Towne.  Coming up for Pereira are IF I STAY and MINIONS.

Richard Sherman (of the legendary songwriting Sherman Brothers) recently performed a new role as music consultant on the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks—a film that depicts an important chapter in his own life. Sherman is the last surviving person intimately involved in the turbulent development of Mary Poppins, when Walt Disney set to convincing author Pamela Travers to let him and the Sherman Bros. tell her story on the big screen. Sherman is played by Jason Schwartzman in the film, and served as a living reference for the screenwriter, director, and cast—coaching them on how it all really happened. Read more...

Marcelo Zarvos says he always knew, somehow, “film would find him.” The Brazilian-born pianist, songwriter, and composer first met music playing in rock bands in his home country, then studied formally at Berklee College of Music and California Institute of the Arts. Celebrating Creation

ALAN MENKEN has received his first Emmy nomination for the original song "More Or Less The Kind Of Thing You May Or May Not Possibly See On Broadway" from ABC's THE NEIGHBORS. The composer is up to become only the 12th person to win the illustrious EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony). If Menken wins he also lays claim to the even more illustrious REGOT (the EGOT + a Razzie, easily the entertainment industry's highest honor). MARC SHAIMAN and SCOTT WITTMAN have received their third Emmy nomination for NBC's musical series SMASH. The duo are nominated for the original song "Hang the Moon" from the second season. They were previously honored with two nominations for the show's first season. Visit iTunes to download the nominated song and more music from the second season.

Tony Award winner DEREK MCLANE has received his first Emmy nomination for designing the sets for the 85th Academy Awards telecast hosted by Seth MacFarlane. He has previously worked on numerous Broadway and Off-Broadway shows including NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT, FOLLIES, HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING, ANYTHING GOES, RAGTIME, THE BEST MAN, and THE HEIRESS.

ALEXANDRE DESPLAT has been nominated in the Film Composer of the Year category for the sixth year in a row at the World Soundtrack Awards for such films as ARGO, RISE OF THE GUARDIANS, ZERO DARK THIRTY, REALITY and RENOIR. The composer's music will also be celebrated and performed at the 13th World Soundtrack Awards Gala on October 19th.

DANNY ELFMAN has also been honored with a Film Composer of the Year nomination for his music for EPIC, FRANKENWEENIE, HITCHCOCK, OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, PROMISED LAND and SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK.
NICK URATA will be honored at the 14th annual BIG BEAR LAKE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, a fest that spotlights emerging screenwriters and independent films. URATA will receive the Film Music Award of Excellence for his impressive body of work for films like LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE, I LOVE YOU PHILIP MORRIS, WHAT MAISIE KNEW, A.C.O.D., and RUBY SPARKS.
DANNY ELFMAN was honored with his 5th Saturn Award at the 39th Annual Saturn Awards for Best Score to Tim Burton's stop-motion animated feature FRANKENWEENIE, which was also recognized in the Best Animated Film category.

was honored with a Mexican Cinema Journalist Award for his score for the comedy HIDDEN MOON. The Academy Award-winning composer of IL POSTINO composed the music for the American/Mexican co-production, which was released in Mexican theaters.
The credits at this year's Toronto International Film Festival are a veritable lineup of KEM clients. Having their North American premieres at the festival are Stephen Frears' PHILOMENA, with music composed by ALEXANDRE DESPLAT; Errol Morris' THE UNKNOWN KNOWN, scored by DANNY ELFMAN; John Curran's TRACKS, with music by GARTH STEVENSON; and A PROMISE and TOM AT THE FARM, both featuring music by GABRIEL YARED.
It was the same story across the pond, where multiple entries at the Venice International Film Festival were graced with the music of several KEM clients. Following his Academy Award-nominated score for THE QUEEN, ALEXANDRE DESPLAT has re-teamed with Stephen Frears on the drama PHILOMENA starring Judi Dench, which premiered at the Festival. Acclaimed filmmaker Errol Morris reunited with DANNY ELFMAN for the documentary THE UNKNOWN KNOWN, which launched its festival run in Venice. Other titles that had their world premieres at the festival included John Curran's TRACKS starring Mia Wasikowska, with music by GARTH STEVENSON, and A PROMISE starring Alan Rickman & Rebecca Hall and Xavier Dolan's TOM AT THE FARM, both scored by GABRIEL YARED.

Premiering as the opening night film at the New York Film Festival is CAPTAIN PHILLIPS helmed by THE BOURNE SUPREMACY and ULTIMATUM director Paul Greengrass and starring Tom Hanks. MIKE HIGHAM has music supervised the thriller based on the true story of the seizure of the Maersk Alabama cargo ship in 2009 by four Somali pirates. Additionally, he also served as the supervising music editor.

Following his work on STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE, DANNY ELFMAN reunited with Oscar-winning filmmaker Errol Morris on the documentary THE UNKNOWN KNOWN about notorious former US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. The film was shown at the 40th Telluride Film Festival. Also on the festival line-up was the indie drama TRACKS starring Mia Wasikowsa. The film scored by GARTH STEVENSON tells the true story of Roby Davidson, who in 1977 set out on a solo 2,700-kilometre journey by foot across the Australian Outback.
Creative Space

Trevor Rabin's philosophy is manifest in his studio, a cozy composing and recording space located in the historic heart of moviemaking on a beautiful property overlooking Lake Hollywood. The enormously successful songwriter/guitarist and Grammy-nominated film composer has made his studio a place where directors can hear Rabin's music exactly how it will sound in their movie, and where they can suggest changes and have them implemented in the moment. Creating for Concert

On October 7, London's Royal Albert Hall will host the world premiere of the concert series DANNY ELFMAN's MUSIC FROM THE FILMS OF TIM BURTON. The live concert features newly created suites from the composer's famous scores for the director brought to life on stage by the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Maida Vale Singers, enhanced by visuals on the big screen of Burton's original artwork. Click here to buy tickets and check out a promo video here. Additional concerts will take place in Leeds, Glasgow and Birmingham, as well as Detroit, Vancouver and Seattle. On October 31st, the concert series will be brought to Los Angeles with a special Halloween event featuring a live performance by Elfman accompanied by The Hollywood Symphony Orchestra and The Page LA Choir. The show will be conducted by John Mauceri at the Nokia Theatre. Tickets go on sale September 13th.

The Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum-selling recording artist and composer has made available more than 150 pieces of his original music—from ambient tracks to all the songs on his two most recent albums—absolutely free to use in any non-commercial film project. (If the film is commercial, all profits are donated to the Humane Society). "My hope is that somewhere on you'll find the music you're looking for," he says. "I don't think we've ever said no to anyone."
